STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: As an integral part of the multidisciplinary team, the Perinatal Clinical Nurse (RN) utilizes the nursing process to provide therapeutic, direct patient care and general nursing duties to patients and their families in the Women's & Family Services Department (including OB/GYN, antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum/couplet care, neonatal, and surgical women's health)

o Ability to conduct head-to-toe assessment of antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, female adult, and neonatal assessments and reassessments as per policy

o Demonstrates knowledge of maternal-fetal monitoring. Identifies fetal heart rate patterns and performs appropriate nursing interventions as needed

o Ability to assess presenting part and cardiac activity with ultrasound

o Ability to assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation according to current AHA / AAP guidelines

o Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and their clinical condition

o Follows the medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors

o Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the paiten and / or the family regarding pain management.

o Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical / health care errors.

o Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.

o Ability to monitor hemodynamic status of maternal & neonatal patients and correctly interpret the results

o Ability to perform waived testing (point-of-care testing) per facility policy and procedures

o Ability to interpret results of waived tests; take appropriate action on waived test results.

o Ability to formulate an individualized plan of care, revise plan as indicated by the patient's response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness

o Formulates a teaching plan based upon identified family learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning for the maternal and neonatal dyad.

o Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias and treats appropriately based upon ACLS and NRP protocol

o Coordinates and supervises patient care, as necessary

o Communicates appropriately and clearly to shift supervisor and/or relief charge nurse, co-workers and physicians

o Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs

o Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians and other providers with procedures in Labor & Delivery, PostPartum/Couplet Care, and Newborn Nursery

o Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations

o Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families
